really looking forward to the next half a year of being in Beijing. in China.
it's funny how it may actually be Grey's Anatomy that's starting this whole... looking-back-and-trying-to-understand kind of thing for me.
I've always believe that there's a reason for everything. and looking back... a lot of things start having a reason, a lot of things begin to have causes, have meaning, and it... makes a lot more sense.
my life start to make a lot more sense.
i miss them.
i miss my naivety. the innocence and the freedom.
i love how that seems so antithetical to all that China actually means for most people.
talked to my mom today. about life. about work. about other stuff.
it was actually good.
it's nice having another perspective =).

2 months.
Time passes by SO fast.
It seems just yesterday that I was counting down the days until the results of our exchange applications were revealed, and suddenly, I'm exactly two months away from arriving in Beijing.
So I guess this is the unofficial start to this... exchange blog.
I'm writing this essay for my U of T Modern Art class, and I'm doing it on Chinese Avant-Garde Art. It is still so surprising to me how much excited I am about art and how interested I actually am in the material. I barely have to study for exams because I care and I understand and I remember stuff. Readings are not tedious because I'm interested. This interest is especially heightened when it comes to Chinese modern art.
One of the books I found today (which I discovered going through the Toronto Public Library Catalogue last night, and have been excited about ever since) was "The Wall". It was a book based on a Chinese Avant Garde art exhibition in Buffalo back in 2005, and we actually went to see it as part of a Mary Ward art trip. As I opened the book, I was pleasantly surprised yet confused for a second because it was in both Chinese and English side by side. As I scanned through the book, I didn't really know which side to read. o.O. As I read through other books on Chinese modern art, some written by Westerners, I started thinking about my position.
As I am, I approach this subject from a strange kind of way. I am Chinese, but I have been trained in classical and modern Western art history. Yet at the same time, I come with the background of knowing some of Chinese sociopolitical history and also the Western perception of that history. It was just... very strange... almost as though I was being led through my own history through an outsider's perspective, yet at the same time, I'm still internalizing it with my own understanding somewhere in between.
... wow I am have trouble articulating this o.O.
The point is.. this led me to re-thinking my personal position as I head back to Beijing in two months.
The first thing that came to mind was "stuck in between". But I don't like the words "stuck" or "caught", etc.. they sound too passive, and the dynamics are anything but that.
I have been thinking a lot about taking this year as a year to explore, to re-think, to challenge myself and really... trying to learn more about who I really am and where I really want to be... away from the familiar, back to the roots, etc.. As cliche as all this does sound... it's pretty... true... hence the blog name.
Through this blog, hope to stay in touch with everyone and keep everyone updated for the next year.
looking forward to it =)
